DIY Body Sugar Scrub

My first blog post! This is a new adventure for me. I have been trying to decide what to write a blog on for a while now and constantly changing my mind, but I have decided it is going to be about anything and everything and I am writing about the Christmas presents I made people this Christmas gone. Body Sugar Scrub!

I choose coconut based scrubs as who doesn't love coconut on their skin. Note - my hands felt amazing after making them! It is also easily available in all big food shops, such as Dunnes, where I got mine. The hardest thing to source was the jars to put the scrub into, in which Heatons was my saviour.

I decided I would try and make two "flavours" so everyone was not getting the same from me, and those two I felt were pretty much the same apart from slight changes. Although they do not sound similar. I used the basic receipe from here - super cool looking blog

coconut and lime - mojito
red and peppermint - Christmas

On a Saturday afternoon after collecting all my ingredients I got to work,

Coconut oil,
Olive oil,
sugar, - the main three

lime zest
red food colouring
peppermint oil - the difference

Firstly I heated the coconut oil by placing the container in hot water and melted it, similar to melting butter really. Then for every two cups of coconut oil, I put one cup of sugar and mixed around in a big bowel. Then I added olive oil. This can be quite messy but as I mentioned earlier your hands feel amazing afterwards.

I played around a lot with the mixture and depending on the consistency you would like, means more or less olive oil. A point of reference for me is that when you find the consistency you like, put in a little more oil. This is because the coconut oil will continue to cool down and go harder loosing that consistency.

Red mixing and lime zestingAfter you have done this part, it is all plane sailing from there. Divide the mixture into two containers. Then get your lime and grate the zest into one of the containers. Then mix around. The smell from this is amazing and it really smells, in my opinion, exactly like a mojito that I actually wanted to eat it. Which technically I could, but I didn't.

The other container needs to be divided into two again. One half add red food colouring, until the colour you want is achieved. The other add peppermint oil, again until the smell you want it reached.

The process
Once you have all the scrubs ready, its a matter of putting them into the jars. Mojito flavour was easy, just stuff it in any old way. However I wanted layers with the Christmas flavour and so I had to put it in layer by layer. A slower process when I had to push it down so they would not mix into each other much.

Once they were both full......they are done. I did want to buy ribbon and wrap it around the lid with a candy cane  and then put a label on it, to finish it properly. But I didn't. Christmas came to quickly and so I just gave Candy canes with them but not attached to them. Maybe the next time I try I will be better and do that, but I am not so sure, it again depends on my time scale ha!
I would someone reads this and if you do, that you enjoy it!
